Tuesday. Day 3. Laba-daba-dee.
While we slept, we docked at Labidee, Haiti, at around 5am.
We ordered breakfast to come between 8 and 830. The phone rang at 754 letting us know the food would be arriving soon, and it did, ten minutes early, a very early wake-up call. We had breakfast in bed, pastries, fruit, eggs and hash browns, cereal and yogurt. Basically we got the entire menu minus the meat. After breakfast we headed to the gym and worked out for about 45 minutes, then went back to the room and changed into our bathing suits and got ready to get off the boat.
Labidee is Royal Caribbean's private town in Haiti. They built the port, the beaches, everything. The boat staff actually gets off the boat to work as bartenders and staff on the island. The first place we headed was the Dragon Tail Coaster which we had pre-bought tickets for. The coaster is a bobsled that lifts you to the top of the mountain and goes down really fast. Steph and I had bought two tickets, not realizing it was one ride per ticket, not one person, and two people can ride together, so we went twice. It was really fun, and fast, and a little tiny bit scary, but not really. After that we headed to the beach which was a short walk through the 'Artisan Village,' where Haitian people accost you and try to sell you things. The beach area was pretty crowded, and most chairs were taken. We asked a couple of the guys who worked at the beach to help get us seats but they were unhelpful and one said there were no seats left at all. After that guy walked away Sheldon pulled a ten from his wallet and held it in his hand. Immediately a guy offered to help and got us 6 fantastic seats together in the shade right at the water. These guys at the beach work for Royal Caribbean on the island, but they weren't the staff that come from the ship.
Lunch was a bbq buffet (there were three buffets around the island). We took salad and coleslaw, and I went down the burger assembly line, taking the bun, cheese, tomato and onion, but leaving behind the burger. After that we went in the water, which was nice and warm. We swam for a bit and floated on mats and laid in the shade. The boys went to the Aqua Park which had slides and a trampoline in the water.
Around 3 we went back to the ship, (I showered), changed, and then went to the Boardwalk on deck 6 and had lunch at Johnny Rockets, which was $4.95 a person, which included unlimited everything except for shakes. They kept bringing plates of fries and onion rings with ranch dressing (I think we went through 6 of them), Steph had a tuna sandwich and I had grilled cheese. I also had a vanilla malt and Steph had a chocolate malt. Everything was delicious.
After Johnny Rockets we went inside to the Schooner Bar (there are so many different bars and lounges on this ship) where we all played movie theme trivia. We scored 11 1/2 out of 15, putting us tied for third. Avery has been doing a lot of trivia on this cruise, so this went toward his trivia total. After, Steph went back to the room to shower, and I went with the boys to play miniature golf. I scored a 40, Avery got a 29, and Austin got a 24. I went back to the room and put on my dinner clothes, and at 645 we went down to the main theater to see Chicago. The show was good, not as good as the movie, and probably not as good as the actual thing is on Broadway, but I still enjoyed it.
After the show the boys went for pizza, and the 4 of us went to Central Park to Vintages, a wine and tapas bar. They didn't have kosher wine, but we got tapas, which is Spanish cuisine, small plates for sharing. We got guacamole, sourdough bread with garlic and cherry tomatoes, gazpacho, tuna croquets, potato-omelet wedges, and grilled veggies. Everything was really good and tasty. We left, checked out the art gallery which features just one artist, a guy named Romero Britto who does really interesting and colorful modern art. Then we went back to the Royal Promenade and got coffee and desserts at the cafe. This time they told me the coffee cake had nuts in it, but couldn't tell me what kind of nuts - basically, the woman working knew nothing and there was no supervisor there to help me. Whatever, it was fine, I didn't need one more piece of cake. Lisa and Sheldon went back to their room, and me, Steph and Austin went back to the theater for the "Love and Marriage Game Show" which was basically the newlywed game. They picked people from the audience, a honeymoon couple, a middle aged couple, and an older couple. We didn't try out. The old couple - Bernie and Estelle - had been married for 65 years and said really funny stuff, like "Bernie likes the sexy movies, we have a whole bunch of them at home."
After that we went up to the Dazzles bar again, where we caught the last song of the Big Band hour (Glenn Miller's In the Mood) and then sat for a bit listening to not the best selection of golden oldies. Then we went back to the room and went to sleep.
